Dr James C. Marotta, a plastic surgeon, echoed my own concerns in the 2013 article "Are Oxygen Facials the new Botox?" when he warned that the oxygen facials can do more harm than good for those attempting to erase lines and blemishes.
“I doubt that the oxygen penetrates the skin in any meaningful way,” Dr Marotta says. “Even if it did, the effects of concentrated oxygen are not known and there is even a theoretical danger in that oxygen can generate free radicals, which can lead to more skin damage."
The latest variations of Oxygen facial machines now also include serums that are added to the air and blown onto the skin. Applying a serum on top of cleansed skin will give it an immediate hydrated appearance and feel. This is why your face will appear dewy after an oxygen facial.
But here is an insiders tip: for the cost of one Oxygen facial with its hydrating serums you could just apply a hydrating, antioxidant serum to your own skin daily for a couple of months. (We have several fabulous options, seriously, just ask me.)

In a New York Times article "Does the quick fix oxygen facial really work", Dr. Christopher B. Zachary suggested that the plumping or swelling effect might be mild inflammation caused by the blasts of compressed oxygen, although at the time of the article he had not examined the oxygen-compression machine himself.
Dr. Zachary went even further in denouncing these treatments:
"The concept that high-pressure oxygen would do anything to help the skin is such nonsense as to be laughable."
So the reason Oxygen facial are popular with celebrities is that it supposedly gives a couple of days of plumping (which may be due to temporary inflammation) before their red carpet events.
But Dr. Jessie Cheung warns there are no clinical studies to prove their effectiveness and Dr. Michael Smith warns that "they may not be worth the extra money."
Our alternative to a traditional Oxygen Facial is our Oxygenating Facial which increases hydration and oxygen from the inside out. You will have the long-term benefits from the increased circulation and it can be done as often as you want or need without the concerns of free radical damage. As an esthetician this is, in my opinion, a safer, healthier and more beneficial way to get the same results.
The 2 quick and simple ways to save money on an Oxygen facial is to get in our $70/70min event this month and to ask us about powerful anti-oxidant, anti-aging, replenishing serums you can use daily.
I leave you with my favorite quote from Dr. Zachary:
Let me know if you have had a traditional oxygen facial? Or have you had our Oxygenating Facial? What did you think of the facials? Do you agree or disagree?

"If you wanted puffy eyes, you could also go out for a hard night's drinking."
