Skin Care Myths, 10 Lies You Need to Know

1. Chocolate causes Acne

False:

Chocolate has no impact on acne, either causing it or making it worse. If you break out after eating chocolate you have either a sensitivity or allergy to chocolate, switch to carob.
The only food item to really watch out for is iodine. Excessive amounts of iodine does cause acne breakouts.

2. Pure Vitamin E oil is good for your skin

False:

Pure Vitamin E oil is HIGHLY Comedogenic, which means it will cause a massive blackhead breakout. In small amounts, combined with other skincare ingredients is a good anti-oxidant and works well. Avoid putting store-bought Vitamin E oil on your face, back and arms - traditional breakout zones. If you must use it then only for 3 days on a specific area.

3. Natural skincare is always better for sensitive skin

False:

Natural skincare uses the whole plant that contains both useful and irritating elements. For a sensitive skin this is more harmful than helpful. A synthetic version can take out the irritants and keep the useful elements.

4. Darker skin does not need SPF

False:

Dark skin absorbs more UV rays than a paler skin.  Fortunately less of those rays penetrate the dermal, deeper. layer. But a darker skin tone is NOT guaranteed protection against Skin Cancer, Sunburns or Uneven Pigmentation. (Remember to especially protect the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and lips against UV exposure. Those 3 areas are at higher risk of skin cancer.)

5. You must close your pores.

False:

"Your pores aren't doors, they don't open, they don't close. Plus if I could close your pores it would probably KILL YOU." - Michelle Lathe
Your pores remain open to allow oil and sweat to escape, and the size of pores are based on oil production. Oily skin = larger pores.

6. Petrolatum (Vaseline)  is bad for the skin

False:

Only the highly refined grade petrolatum is approved for cosmetic and personal use. It is non-toxic and allergies are extremely rare to almost non-existent.
Petrolatum is also the only product that can safely be applied to raw skin; post laser and chemical peels, since it re-creates the skin barrier and prevents infection and bacteria from entering.

7. A vigorous scrub is a good exfoliation

False:

Over scrubbing can cause sensitivity and irritation leading to a worsening of existing acne, flareup of new pustules, "broken" capillaries, permanent redness and permanently sensitive skin.
A good exfoliation is NOT a vigorous scrub. A good exfoliation may include a combination of a MILD, GENTLE scrub with an exfoliating mask containing enzymes or AHA acids.

8. A moisturizer adds moisture to the skin

False:

Traditional moisturizer seal in existing moisture. To increase your skin hydration spritz on a soothing toner or distilled water then apply your moisturizer over slightly damp skin.

9. Oily skin does not need a moisturizer

False:

Oil and water are two different needs within your skin. Oily skin can trap water to the skin but often with use and overuse of harsh cleansers and scrubs the skin becomes dehydrated or lacking water. One sign of dehydration is skin having a "pulled-tight" feeling. An oil-free moisturizer holds onto water which allows for faster healing and healthier skin.

10. Acne is caused by dirt or is a sign of of dirty skin

False:

ACNE IS NOT DIRT. Acne is caused by excess dead skin cells, sebum (oil) and p. acne bacteria. The p.acne bacteria "hangs out" inside the hair follicles and is triggered by hormones, friction and stress. When bacteria "eats" the dead cells and sebum this creates blackheads, in an open follicle, and whiteheads under the the skin.
