Stressed? You need this 1 minute quick fix!

Stress is common. Too common. Problems arise when you lest expect them and can turn your ordered day into chaos. Or you may work at a chaotic job -  in an ER, at fast paced office or as a parent. How do you keep from losing focus?

I learned the most effect de-stressing quick fix from my personal exercise experiences with Alexander Technique Pilates, Yoga, and Weight Training instructors. What is this incredible quick fix, you ask?

BREATHING!

Sounds silly, I know. But when I started Alexander Technique and Pilates I was surprised to have my instructor, Shel, constantly remind me to breathe. Of course I am breathing! But...I wasn't. I was doing what so many of us do when exerting ourselves or in a moment of stress, I was holding my breath.

STOP HOLDING YOUR BREATH!

Have you  realized that you hold your breath? Have you noticed how often you hold your breath? Or that when you finally exhale, it feels like you body has collapsed on itself!

Holding our breath is not good for us. It also puts stress on our body and our mind.

THE QUICK FIX!

The good news is that this breathing tip is an easy quick fix. The great news is that you can use this simple technique to induce relaxation and calm, combat stress, improve  your massage therapy appointments and help you get a better nights sleep.

THE "Stop steaming up my tail" TRICK!

There are several interesting breathing techniques and different uses for them. The one I find the best when you have just a minute is a yoga breathing called Ujjayi (Ooo-jai-ee) Breathing. I just think of it as "Stop steaming up my tail" from this old Bugs Bunny cartoon:

Ujjayi and the "Stop steaming up my tail" Breathing Checklist

  • Take a deep cleansing breath through your nose - fill your lungs, expand your belly and chest.
  • Breathe it out completely through your mouth - as if your are steaming up Bugs' tail, or a mirror.
  • Repeat this 3 times.
  • Take a deep yet comfortable breath through your nose.
  • With your LIPS CLOSED breath out through your mouth completely. Allow yourself to make a breathy sound that may mimic the bull's heavy breathing.
  • Repeat for a minute or until you feel your body relax.

Where can you try this out?

Everywhere! This works well at the office, with the kids (trust me on this, I've used this when spending time with my ADORABLE nephews and it's better than considering duct tape) and it is a great trick before bedtime. (Disclaimer: NO I would NEVER use duct tape... breathing is MUCH better!!)

Try it at your next massage

It is also an amazing way to start your body massage, put your body and mind in relaxed state so you can get even more from your massage therapy session.

A great visual how-to video on the Ujjayi breathing technique was created by my fav online yogi, at Yoga with Adrienne. Enjoy!
