Helpful Skin Care from 5 Baby Favorites

Tuscany Spa blog Helpful skincare from 5 baby favorites

My sister is a new mom again to my beautiful niece. Like all moms she carries her baby supplies kit everywhere she goes.

Looking through it one day I noticed she had 5 items on hand that are perfect for skincare emergencies. Today's Blog is:

Your Quick Emergency Skincare From 5 Baby Essentials.

Baby Wipes

Unscented, sensitive skin baby wipes are incredible multi-taskers. Not just for baby's sensitive bottom but cleaning up sticky spots that seem to magically appear on little ones.

Did you know that those same baby wipes can be used in a pinch as a makeup remover and cleanser?

Baby wipes don't give as a thorough a cleansing but better than skipping you night time routine completely.  Just remember to wash your face properly in the morning.

Cheerios Cereal

Watching my nephew Benjamin get his chubby fingers around his Cheerios's snacks was highly entertaining. Fortunately he didn't know I would snag his cereal for this next trick.

The benefits of oatmeal for soothing irritated skin are well documented. So my niece and nephews unsweetened, plain Cheerios brand oatmeal cereal makes a great calming mask.

Recipe for Mom's Cheerios Calming Mask:
  • crush 1/3 cup of cheerios
  • Mix with 1/2 to 1 Tablespoon of water.
  • Or make a hydrating mask, instead of water use milk, heavy whipping cream or aloe-vera
  • Apply the Cheerios mask paste to your face; or on any area of dry, sensitive skin
  • Leave on at least for 5 minutes; or up to 20 minutes for better results.

Desitin diaper rash cream

Imagine this scenario: During your walk you realize your baby's delicate skin is exposed and is turning red. But in your rush out the door you forgot your sunscreen. No Worries. Every prepared mom has the essential baby bag on hand. You have got this covered.

Desitin diaper rash cream, used since 1919,  contains Zinc Oxide, a natural mineral protectant ingredient. Zinc Oxide, in micronized from, is also used in sunscreen. So grab the Desitin, cover baby's skin and breathe a sigh of relief. (Be sure to avoid around mouth, so they don't eat it.)

In an emergency you can even put it on your own skin. The biggest drawback: You'll be rocking the old school 80's white nose surfer lookModern zinc SPF no longer leaves the white film because they use the smaller sized micronized zinc oxide to blend into your skin tone.
.
FYI: Calming Calamine lotion is created by a combination of Zinc Oxide and Iron Oxide.

Baby Aspirin

This miracle med comes originally from the white willow bark tree. Baby Aspirin was created to help our little ones but it can also be used by moms, and the teens, in a skin breakout emergency.
  • Crush a couple of tablets,
  • Mix with a few drops of water until it forms a paste
  • Apply the paste directly onto a swollen acne spot with a cotton swab,
  • After 10 minutes, rinse off you baby aspirin acne mask.
  • Follow with moisturizer and Ice Balloons
White willow bark is also the original source for popular acne ingredient: Salicylic Acid, which helps reduce acne redness and swelling.

Note: if you dont have baby aspirin You can use regular aspirin.

Antibiotic Ointment (Neosporin/Polysporin)

This incredible ointment has many uses protecting open wounds and speeding up healing. The ointment is petrolatum based and it works by recreating the skins protective layer, allowing the skin to heal itself. The antibiotic prevents infection from entering through open wounds.

Pimple self-removal?

How often are you tempted to squeeze a pimple only to be left with your skin cut open and looking worse? What to do?
  • Wash the area with a mild cleanser.
  • (If swollen after self-extracting, apply an Ice Balloon for a few minutes.)
  • Pat dry.
  • Apply a layer of antibiotic ointment, with a cotton swab, 2 to 3 times a day.
  • Continue to apply antibiotic ointment for at least 3 days in a row or until healed.

Makeup over wounded skin?

If you have to apply makeup but don't want the foundation simply to fill up the wound, here is another trick
  • Apply thin layer of Neosporin first and let in absorb in.
  • When you are applying your layer of makeup, mix the foundation with Antibiotic Ointment
  • Pat the makeup ointment blend over the post-self-extraction spot
  • Apply your setting powder and you are good to go
